Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 11/22/13
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Students had a multiplication quiz using decimals this past Tuesday, Nov. 19. Most students performed well on this quiz. Any child receiving a 75% or less is asked to practice their facts and procedures with decimals. They were also to inform their parents about their performance and get a parent signature on the top of the quiz paper this week. I will do some reviews with those needing my help as well as work with students who need extra practice on Monday, Nov. 25 during the first part of their recess. Any extra math fact practice or additional problems at home would be great. Retakes for those scoring 75% or less will be on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Currently, we have moved on to basic division facts and vocabulary. We are then using this as our building block for long division. Students are making progress, and we will continue to practice next week. Any extra support is appreciated.
Reading: “How does your character compare?” We compared and contrasted two or more of the characters in picture books that we have read. We discovered there are many ways to determine the character traits of a character. We can focus on what the characters say, think and do and also how they react to other characters and situations. We also learn from what other characters have to say about them. We then we used the evidence from the book to compare and contrast the characters. We engaged in some great discussions!
One big revelation this week was discovering how much fun reading is when we see reading as a “social” activity, not just individual. It is fun to hear others’ thoughts and perspectives.
We continue to read our chapter books and we had our first book talk today. The students had great conversations. They will need to finish the book by Wednesday, December 4th.
We are continuing to enjoy our read aloud, Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. The characters are beginning to discover the clues to escape the library.
Science: We began to compare and contrast the characteristics of Earth with other planets in our solar system. By looking at similarities and differences between planets, we can better understand the need to appreciate and take care of our Earth.
Social Studies: We finished sharing our personal timelines this week. The students enjoyed learning about each other as they worked on the progression of their lives and the features associated with timelines. Presentations were well done as the confidence of speaking in front of others is building. I am proud of the students.
Word Study: It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We continue to focus on word features and challenges appropriate for us. More and more students are choosing harder words and vocabulary. I appreciate their eagerness to challenge themselves.
Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support with these skills.
NOTE: No word study work or test next week due to a short week.
